Angel’s Rest - Columbia River Gorge This is one

Angel’s Rest - Columbia River Gorge

This is one of the most popular hikes in the Columbia River Gorge. Its proximity to Portland (we got there in 25 minutes) and amazing views contribute to the popularity. We decided to do this one on a Thursday to miss some of the crowds.

It is a small parking lot, and even the overflow lot is not real big. Most of the parking was full for us.

Our @garmin clocked this at 4.6 miles, with about 1450 feet of elevation gain. Some reviews commented on how steep it was, but we did not think it was that steep. We would rate it as moderate on overall difficulty.

Definitely some beautiful views on the way up, and of course at the top. If you can, hike it on a weekday, and try to catch some decent weather!

Smith Rock State Park

Located near Bend, OR, Smith Rock State Park is a true gem. Apparently this is a rock climber’s paradise, but we only went for a hike. Maybe we will get back and try our hand at climbing.

Our @garmin clocked this one at 6.25 miles and just under 1800 feet of elevation gain. A large portion of the elevation gain is on Misery Ridge, which feels like it is straight up. It was not so bad, but definitely a good way to get warmed up.

We added on the Summit Trail to get the full experience, and it did provide some beautiful views and the Sisters peaks and Mt Jefferson.

The weekends here can be very crowded from what we have heard. We were fortunate to be able to go on a beautiful weather Monday in March, and we did not see many people on the trail.

The most incredible experience with the best group of people.

One of the most challenging, and rewarding things we have done. Would go back to the freezing cold, hard beds, terrible sleep, no showers, and thin air in a second.

Located on the border on Washington and Oregon, the Columbia River Gorge is one of the most scenic drives we have done.

A beautiful drive, endless hikes and waterfalls, and Mt Hood not far away. You can choose your own adventure, and there is a little something for everyone.

Our first hike while in Portland, was not actually even in Oregon. We crossed the Columbia River over into Washington to check out this hike.

This is a loop trail that ended up being just under 7 miles, with ~1700 feet of elevation gain.

Most people we saw went counter clockwise, but we wanted to get the road part out of the way first so we went clockwise. Overall, I would say it’s pretty similar either way, so probably not a huge deal.

This took us right along the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, and the wind that comes with it. When the wind picked up, it was pretty chilly, but otherwise a beautiful day.

The waterfall caught us by surprise a little bit, and did not expect to have to run through there. But, it was pretty fun and we really did not get very wet at all.

The top provides stunning views, and was well worth it. Not a terribly difficult hike, other than a few rocky sections.

On the way home, we found Grains of Wrath Brewery for a little snack and a beer. Beer was very solid, food was ok. Would go again for the beer.

The Dolomites 🇮🇹

This place is definitely in the top tier of favorite and most beautiful places we have ever been. It was absolutely amazing!

We really enjoyed all of our time in the Greek Islands and at the beach, but we were ready for some mountains.

Getting from Ikaria to the Dolomites is not exactly the easiest thing (shocker). The more typical route is to fly into Venice and drive from there (~2.5-3 hours). But, we went with the longer route and flew into Milan because the flight was better, and then we could get to drive through some of the western side. It was a much longer drive (~6 hours), but totally worth it for the amazing views and even some snow.

Cortina d’Ampezzo was our home base for our time there. Lucky for us, a storm had blown through a few days prior and dumped a fresh layer of snow. Then we ended up with beautiful weather to hike in.

Early October is the shoulder season, where most hiking and trekking are done and the rifugios are closed and ski season has not quite started. This worked out great for our hiking, but not so much for the food situation after the hikes. The food was the biggest letdown for sure, but it was still good enough overall.

We already want to go back, and we are hoping we can do the Alta Via. This is probably at the top of the list of places we would return to from the trip. Highly recommend!!!
